MINEYE was showcased at the University of Cairo

MINEYE was presented during a lecture delivered by Francesco Tinti (University of Bologna) on 10th February, hosted by the University of Cairo, Department of Mining, Petroleum and Metallurgical Engineering. During the lecture, Francesco introduced the objectives of the project and highlighted the ongoing activities being carried out within the framework of the initiative, focusing on innovative approaches for responsible and sustainable mining in Europe.

Lecture Synopsis:
Mining has been widespread in Mediterranean countries since ancient times and the related historical heritage can be found everywhere. In the modern era, the Mediterranean countries of southern Europe (Italy, Spain, Greece and others) continued operations, including mechanization and blasting. Despite this, between 1970 and 1990, due to more stringent safety issues, greater environmental concerns and changing economic paradigms, most mines were closed and operations moved out of Europe or permanently abandoned.
A new race for “critical” raw materials has currently resumed, with multiple exploration projects from primary resources and also mining tailings and stockpiles as secondary resources. Preliminary studies for the reactivation of mining operations are ongoing, exploiting the most modern technology and at the same time respecting the most advanced safety, environmental and social standards. This lecture aims to provide an overview of ongoing actions for the reactivation of sustainable and responsible mining activity in some Southern European countries, with particular attention to EU-funded projects.
