MINEYE partners’ visit to the project pilot site in Albania

30 July – 2 August 2024

The trip was scheduled to gain a better understanding of the Ternove mine site in Albania and was scheduled as a three-day intensive visit, involving  two main sub-goals; (i) visit the Ternove mine, evaluate the area and make a plan for the upcoming geophysical surveys, and (ii) meet with the Geological Survey of Albania (GSA) and discuss possible collaboration to maximize the efficiency of our work and its impact.

Participating partners were Luleå University of Technology (LTU), University of Bologna (UNIBO) and the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI), together with the mine owners and staff from SORICOM company, who also participated in the trip.

On the first day, the partners visited the Ternove mine. The team visited the mine shaft and evaluated the geology of the chromium mineralization inside the mine. The geology of the site and its accessibility, as well as possibilities to expand the measurement area, were observed and discussed. The visit was organized and hosted by SORICOM.

On the second day, the MINEYE project team met with GSA experts to discuss the potential, opportunities and challenges within planned activities of the MINEYE project, with a focus on new exploration. The Deputy director of the GSat Department heads from Ore Geology, exploration geophysics and 3D modelling groups as well as technical staff were present in the meeting. The meeting started with a comprehensive presentation by GSA experts and followed by presentation of the MINEYE project with focus on the Ternove site. The participants also discussed the needs and expectations of one another for a collaborative work between the parties.

The project team is now working to prepare a document specifying the available data from the Ternove mine.
