MINEYE has conducted its 1st public poll to gauge perceptions of the most significant environmental impacts of mining. Participants were asked, “Which do you consider to be the major types of mining impact?

The poll received 49 responses, highlighting the diverse concerns associated with mining operations.

The poll results indicate that geochemical impacts to water and soils were the most frequently cited concern, with 34 respondents identifying this as a major issue. Biodiversity and habitat impacts (21 votes) and physical land impacts, such as subsidence and landslides (20 votes), also ranked high among concerns.

Additional impacts highlighted in the poll include: Waste impoundment failures: 14 votes, Hazardous chemicals (e.g., cyanide): 13 votes, Erosion and sedimentation of waterways: 13 votes, Hydrologic impacts: 12 votes, and Air emissions: 10 votes.
